Welcome to Cornwall (especially if you're a decorator)

In the small village of St Teath, north Cornwall, there are a number of properties such as a pub, shop , a few buildings that are a couple of hundred years old, and many newer buildings. Hopefully I will find out exactly how many properties there are in the village in the near future, and of course post on this blog.

More examples of villages and towns decorated in north Cornwall can be found here.

A large majority of these properties are painted externally, and internally obviously, but the exterior is always the area people will see fully and comment on the most. Well, they do in St Teath in the summer anyway! But never judge a book by its cover.

There are still some stone faced buildings that have never been decorated, but many have been rendered, finished in roughcast, or had masonry paint applied directly to the stone work.

The most common exterior colour is white. A traditional stone cottage would have the masonry or stonework painted in white, and the joinery - windows, doors, fascias and soffits - in black.

A decorator in Cornwall would also be expected to paint external masonry and stonework in magnolia and cornish cream, the latter becoming more popular. Joinery would then be painted in white to suit, or black.

Front entrance doors can be decorated in many different colours at the clients request. But as upvc is becoming the more popular material for doors etc, then white is becoming the common colour of external doors, windows, fascias and soffits.
